Be inspired and be patient. Your destiny awaits.

1. What is a day in the life of @makeupbymrzjaye?

My day usually starts the night before. I always look up via my GPS the location of the venue/ location for my appt so that I know what kind of drive and time it’ll take for me to get there. I always make sure that I place everything in my car so that the next day, I  have everything that I need for my appointment clean, packed and ready to go. If I have an early morning appt, I usually go to sleep early, like around 9’ish, so that I am well rested. It usually takes me about an hour to get ready in the morning. This includes me taking a shower, getting dressed, and then beating my face to perfection. I never overdo my makeup when I’m about to see a client. I work with alot of brides and I make it so that my look is soft with warm tones and a nude lips to match the affair. I find that my brides and clients appreciate this look very much. After, I’ve applied my makeup I then I grab a cup of tea (green tea) and a banana. Once I get to my appt, whether it’s at my spa or on location I introduce myself, get my station set up and then start to transition my clients from woman to goddess. I love conversing and interacting with my clients. We can have a deep conversation about life and spirituality and also have a silly and fun convo as well. I love making my clients laugh especially my brides because it’s their big day and sometimes they’re nervous, they’re excited, they want everything to be perfect. So, by making them laugh or talking about how they met their fiancé it eases their mind. When, I’m finished with my last client, I always ask if they need me for anything or have any questions. If not, we then schedule their next appt. On my days off, I’m usually doing marketing for my business, doing mini tutorials to upload to my Instagram and finding new ways to get more exposure for my brand.

2. How did you career begin in the world of beauty?

Well, I was in the corporate world for 8 years, and about 7 years ago my cousin came to visit me and we went to the MAC store. There she got me my first MAC brush and introduced me to MAC cosmetics. I had always worn makeup. Nothing like I do now, but after going to the MAC store my interest in makeup was peaked. What was just a hobby started turning into a passion. Friends and family started asking me to do their makeup and I realized I really enjoyed doing it. About 3 years ago I decided to become a freelance makeup artist and I started freelancing for MAC. From there my clientele started to grow and I started booking so much so that I couldn’t freelance for MAC as much as I used to. Last year, I decided to take things a step further. So, I became a licensed esthetician. In December of 2014, I quit my corporate job and in January 2015, I found a beautiful space for a spa that was available for rent. It was in a great location, upstairs of an amazing salon and without any hesitation I knew I had to have it. I moved in the next week. It’s been 8 great months and I’m so excited for what the future holds.

3.Which celebrity would you love to do makeup for?

Well, I actually have 3 celebrities that I would love to do makeup for…don’t we all have a list? lol… But if I would have to choose one, it would have to be Jennifer Lopez. I loved her from “Selena”. She is a goddess. Her determination and tenacity when it comes to pursuing her dreams is inspiring. I love that she’s a “girlie girl” also. She’s comes across as very relatable, like we can sit and have a conversation about life, love, kids, goals and she’d get it. She’s the type of woman that inspires others while remaining true to herself and I love that. She’s fun, sexy, a fashionista and best of all, she knows her worth. Still, today she continues to set goals for herself and continues to set the bar for not only herself, but for other women as well. She knows that beauty is only skin deep and she empowers and motivates women like myself to strive to be better than they were yesterday.

4.How would you describe your signature look?

My signature look is all about the eyes and brows. My specialty is bridal makeup. So, I love warm tones with a subtle smokey eye. Brows are groomed, shaped and enhanced  and then I top it all off with a nude lip and natural looking lashes. As women we say so much with our eyes so for me, it’s important to make them pop.

5.What is your most memorable moment while doing someone’s makeup?

My most memorable moment came when one of my clients bridesmaids sat in my chair and she was burned over 90% of her body, including her face. What I loved most about this client, is that even though she had been severely scarred, she had the most bubbly, happy and outgoing personality. When most women in her position would probably feel self conscious about their appearance, she had embraced this “flaw” and did not allow it to define her. We laughed and talked as I applied her makeup and when I was finished she looked in the mirror and was so happy with the look I gave her. She thanked me for giving her eyebrows. She was truly an inspiration to me. She showed me how that beauty is not just about how you look on the outside its about how you feel on the inside and how you make others feel when they’re around you.

6.What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?

The most important beauty advice would have to be to take care of your canvas first. Never sleep with makeup on and always remember makeup is used to enhance what you already have, true beauty starts from within.

7.What are some common beauty mistakes women make?

I would have to say the 2 biggest common mistakes women make are 1. Not applying foundation to the chin and neck area. It is so important to make sure that you apply foundation to these areas so as to not appear to be wearing a mask. 2.  The other common mistake is exfoliating every day. This is a “no no” especially if you have oily skin. Exfoliating everyday actually activates the oil glands on your face. So, the more you exfoliate the more uncontrollable the oil becomes. If you have oily skin its best to exfoliate 1 to 2x a week and use a pore refining toner or witch hazel to help close pores.

8.Do you feel that looking and feeling beautiful is important in regard to a woman’s confidence?

Absolutely! They go hand in hand. When a woman feels beautiful, she makes sure to look her best as well. Self confidence then exudes from her naturally. When it comes from within she doesn’t have to try nor does she seek validation from others. It’s in the way she walks, the way she talks, the way she takes on a challenge or faces adversity. I also strongly believe that when a woman feels beautiful, it becomes contagious. Other women see her and think “hey, I think I’ll get my hair done” or for some, maybe they feel motivated to chase that dream they had once put on hold.

9.Have you achieved all of your goals? If not what are they?

Not even close. I have so much more to go and I’m so motivated and so excited about what my future holds. When I made the decision last year to leave corporate america, and step out on faith to open my spa and chase my dreams, I didn’t know what to expect, but this has been a great journey thus far. I’m learning and growing everyday as a business owner and my skills as a makeup artist are constantly growing and improving. I’m constantly working on perfecting my skills as a makeup artist. In this industry there’s always a new trend a new technique. So, i’m always learning and trying new things. I would love to become a bonafide celebrity makeup artist and the “go to” skin care specialist. Hopefully, one day I’d like to work as a beauty and skincare contributor for a major magazine, like ESSENCE, ELLE or VOGUE. I want Mrz.Jaye to be a household name that women associate with great skin care, an amazing makeup artist and a true inspiration.

10.Who has inspired you throughout your career?

I would have to say that celebrity makeup artist and former youtuber Beatface Honey, is a true inspiration. I followed her for many years and watched how she went from her parents basement to becoming one of the top celebrity makeup artist today. Her story is truly inspiring. It lets me know to keep going and never give up on my dreams. If you want something bad enough you have to stick with it. Never give up and everything will all happen at the right time.

11.Do you see yourself one day creating your own line of makeup?

I would love to!!  A makeup and skin care line would be great one day. I love using natural products. So, to be able to share with women around the world my beauty and skincare secrets through a line of  “Goddess Faces by Mrz. Jaye” beauty products would be a dream come true.

12.What are some of your favorite products?

My favorite products for makeup are Too Faced Face Primed & Poreless Face Primer. One word… amazing. It goes on so smooth and gives the best flawless finish. I love MAC’s Studio Finish Concealer, it gives great coverage and it’s the only concealer I use to achieve a perfectly enhanced brow. There’s also the MAC’s Matchmaster Foundations… It’s great, the name says it all “MatchMaster”, It will provide the closest, if not perfect match to your skin tone. I also love MAC’s  Blush “Blunt”, its perfect for contouring. My new faves are the LORAC Unzipped Gold Shimmer pallet. The pigments are intense and absolutely gorgeous. I’m totally in love with Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation/Concealer in one. Its one of the most light weight and full coverage foundations I’ve ever used.

13. Favorite concealer?

MAC’s studio finish concealer has the best coverage bar none. If you want the perfect brow, you need this product in your life.

14.What should be a staple in every woman’s purse?

Every woman should have NYX Megashine Lipgloss in the color “natural”. Revlon Color stay black or brown eyeliner, and Neutrogena Rice Protein Powder to assist with shiny/oily skin.

15.Do you believe that less is more?

Well, it all depends on how you feel. Sometimes you want that heavy contour and popping eyes with a bold lip and some days some gloss, liner mascara and well enhanced brows are all you need. It all depends on how you feel. Makeup should help you to enhance what you already have. Some days you want to feel sexy and some days you just want to have fun.

16.What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting into the beauty industry?

If makeup is truly your passion than never give up on it, and it won’t give up on you. Stay in your own lane focus on your journey. It’s not going to be the same journey as everyone else’s, so focus on your journey and truly enjoy every aspect of it. Be sure to take every opportunity you can to get exposure, in a good light. Build your brand and ALWAYS represent yourself the best way you know how wherever and whenever you can.  Be inspired and be patient. Your destiny awaits.

17.How do you cleanse your skin?

Skin care is everything for me. I always tell my clients take care of your canvas first. My skin care regimen includes Neutrogena makeup remover clothes, then I wash my face with Cetaphil Cleanser for oily skin followed by Oil of Olay’s blemish remover with Salicylic acid. I dry my face and apply some Dickinson’s Witchhazel to a cotton ball and apply to my entire face and neck, this helps bring my skin back to its natural PH. I let it dry then I top it all off with a Vitamin C serum and Neutrogena moisturizer. I change my pillow case every other day to ensure no bacteria is reintroduced to my face.

18.Bullying on Instagram is something that happens all the time. How do you handle any negative comments?

DELETE! It’s that simple…. Instagram does not define me or my journey. I must say, I haven’t been on the receiving end of any negative comments, but if I were, I wouldn’t engage. I always say that when someone feels the need to bully, its more about that person and their insecurities than it is about you. I don’t stand for bullying in any way neither would I allow it if I were privy to it.

19.What is beauty to you?

Beauty, to me always starts from within. It’s all in the way a woman carries herself, the ability to inspire, motivate and empower other women is true beauty. Beauty, is the way a woman picks herself up and moves forward after being faced with adversity. Beauty, is being comfortable with who you are, it’s about loving your curves, your freckles, your smile, your hair…loving everything that makes you who you are because. Its loving and knowing that you are amazing without needing validation from others.
