I think by this point, everyone knows how important SPF is. It is an absolute must have for people of every single skin tone to wear when you’re outside. No matter what the season.
You want something that will protect you against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the rays that will cause aging, and UVB are the rays that will burn your skin. Something that claims to be “broad spectrum” means it’s supposed to protect you against both types of rays. However, there is no regulation standards in the US for protection against UVA rays, so you may not be getting as much protection as you think! With so much information and so many different types of sunscreen out there, finding what works best for you is completely over whelming! So I’ve compiled a list of sunscreens, to protect you against all UV rays, for every budget.
Equate Sport Sunscreen lotion, SPF 30 ($6.64 at Amazon) This is a great, low budget sunscreen. It provides protection from all UV rays, as well as being water resistant. As with any SPF, it should still be applied every two hours, but it’s not greasy, and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. If you’re on a low budget, pick up a bottle of this on your next Walmart trip, it’s definitely the best.
Aveeno Baby Natural Protection Mineral Block Sunblock Stick, SPF 50 ($10.99 at Ulta) This is my summer time holy grail. I’ve been using the Aveeno baby stick for my face for as long as I can remember. I use the baby one because it’s gentle, and doesn’t irritate my skin. It’s also waterproof, so you won’t sweat it off if you’re doing an outdoor sport. I would recommend this to everyone. It’s my absolute favorite for face.
Coppertone Sport High Performance Accuspray Sunscreen, SPF 30 ($9.79 at walgreens) I love this sunscreen. If you’re a runner, biker or playing any sports outside, I’d highly recommend trying this out. When you’re doing activities that make you sweat, it makes your skin more vulnerable to sun damage, protecting your skin is really important, and this will not come off when you sweat. It’s a really good sunscreen for sports! Plus, it’s only about 10 dollars for a decent sized bottle.
Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Lotion sunscreen, SPF 30 ($8.99 at drugstore.com) I like this one because it’s got a built in radiance to it. If I’m going to an outdoor wedding or party in the summer, I always like to wear SPF. So this is a nice touch to make your skin look radiant and beautiful. It protects against all UV rays while adding a glowing touch. I wouldn’t use this every day, but it’s great for more formal occasions.
Amazing Maui Babe Sunprotectant Lotion, SPF 30 ($14.99 at drugstore.com) The first time I tried this, I was in Hawaii, so I may be a little biased! A few months after I returned from Hawaii, I saw that Ulta started selling this brand and got excited. The SPF works great! I really love it, it smells good and is broad spectrum! If you’re still looking to get a tan, mix the SPF with their bronzing lotion, for a fantastic tan without all the sun damage.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunscreen, SPF 30 ($10.99 at walgreens) This is my go to sunscreen if I’m going to an outdoor mall, or outdoor concert. It’s extremely light weight and you barely feel it on you, while giving you great protection. The only thing I don’t like about it, is that the bottle is fairly small, and it may not seem worth the almost 14 dollars to some people.
Supergoop! Everyday Sunscreen Broadspectrum, SPF 50 ($19.00 at sephora) I have a love hate relationship with this stuff. I love that it works so well, and you can sweat and swim and it won’t come off, which is awesome! The only draw back is that it’s a little sticky, and you get a tingling sensations when you first apply it. That goes away though, and if you can deal with a touch of stickyness for awesome protection, this is a great one to try!
Clinique Sun SPF 30 Body Cream, ($23.00 at Dillard’s) This sunscreen has been recommended by a lot of dermatologists. It’s a really great, moisturizing, broad spectrum SPF. I think what I like most about this is that it’s so light weight, it just feels like applying a very light weight body lotion. Although it’s a little pricey, I definitely think that it’s something worth trying for everyone.
Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection, SPF 38 ($34.00 at Lord & Taylor) This sunscreen is absolutely amazing. Hands down my favorite, however….. 34 dollars seems to be a bit excessive when it comes to sunscreen. Even for someone who doesn’t mind investing in skin care. If you’ve got a high skin care budget, this one is definitely worth checking out! It’s broad spectrum, and works wonderfully! There’s also a water proof version that’s 40 dollars and is indeed, completely waterproof! The days I spend out surfing all day, I don’t come to shore every two hours to apply sunscreen (I know I should). So on those days I use the waterproof Shisedio sunscreen, to help keep me protected. Since I don’t use it every day, one bottle will last me the whole summer. I think it’s worth the investment if you’re someone who’s not going to reapply as often as you should.
There are different sunscreens, for a whole variety of budgets. These are the ones I’ve tried and loved.
